History of Basketball
The inventor of the game of basketball was a man by the name of James Naismith. Naismith was a physical education teacher at a Y.M.C.A training school which is now known as Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. James had an assignment which was to create a game to play in the YMCA gyms in the winter time and so he created the game of basketball and the 13 original rules in December of 1891. The first games included 9 players a team and used a soccer ball as the ball and peach baskets as the basketball nets. History of NBA At one point, there was four basketball leagues: National Basket Ball League(NBBL), American Basketball League(ABL), National Basketball League(NBL), and Basketball Association of America(BAA). NBBL started in New Jersey and lasted only six years because of financial problems, low attendance and bad leadership. The ABL was in New York and failed to continue on any further because of the best players resigning in this league and moving onto other leagues. The NBL originated in the late 1930s and had sponsors from US industrial companies like Firestone or Goodyear that sponsored the teams. There was a recession in 1937 that caused businesses to take back their sponsorships as well as their support for basketball players because of them went into the military to serve allies in Western Europe. The BAA was originated in New York City. The leadership role was given to a very capable and experienced person. The BAA realized the opportunity at hand and took it. The NBL had a better response from the fans but BAA clubs have the best arenas and are located in largely populated cities. In 1949, BAA and NBL merged and was renamed to be known as the National Basketball Association(NBA). Conflicts & Issues NBA Lockout(2011) Lockouts are no laughing matter when both the players and owners can't decide on player salaries. This one was no different, the players of the NBA wanted a bigger salary that are guaranteed to stay even if the player doesn't perform at 100% while the owners want smaller player salaries and the ability to let players go if they don't perform. The NBA got to this point because last season they lost over $300 million and expect to lose $300 million this season as well. This fight is about making a system to give players competitive salaries without bankrupting/screwing over smaller teams. This lockout lasted 161 days with negotiating among players and owners. On December 8,2011, both players and owners agreed on a new 10 year collective bargaining agreement which includes a 50-50 split of basketball-related income, continue using a soft salary cap system and higher luxury tax. NBA Ref Betting Scandal(2007) Have you ever thought that a referee could manipulate and wager on games that he/she officiated? Tim Donaghy did just that. Tim was a former NBA referee who worked there for 13 seasons from 1994 to 2007. He bet on games from 2003-2007, even on some games that he himself had officiated. Supposedly he had a severe gambling problem that went untreated said by John Lauro, Tim's lawyer in the scandal. Lauro also said that he was taking antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Tim didn't specify how much money per game that he was making if he won the bet. He served 15 months in prison. Advertising on NBA Jerseys(Present) Should there be advertisements placed on player's jerseys? There are talks that are beginning to surface in terms of advertisements on jerseys. This subject has been awhile for awhile now but has recently received much more focus with the new commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver. Silver believes that ads on jerseys will come eventually. There are two things wrong with this. Players in the NBA have their own sponsorship with companies so if this player is on a team which has a sponsorship with something else, that raises problems. The other thing is that it would affect the "purity" of the game. The game wouldn't be the same, it would seem less natural and more about the money. |
