History of the NFL:
America football evolved from the sport rugby. The first game was played on November 6, 1869. American Professional Football Association (APFA) was formed in 1920. It the changed its name to the National Football League for the 1923 season. The NFL merged with the American Football league in 1970. Conflicts and Issues: Concussions: Player safety has been a big issue in the NFL. With football being a contact sport a lot of players receive concussions. Players are forced to were helmets and are taught to make contact with their head up and not down. The average career of an NFL player is 2 to 4 years. In theses few years though players get major injuries and health implications. In 2013 a lawsuit was bought against the NFL for all the injuries ex NFL players have gotten from contact to the head. They reached a settlement o 765 million dollars. Ray Rice Incident: On Feb. 13 2014, Ray Rice the star running back of the Baltimore Ravens beat his wife. The incident was seen on a elevator camera. People were outraged and Ray Rice went to court. All he had to do was a six month anger management program. At first before the video was released Ray Rice just had a two game suspension enforced by the NFL. Then the video was released by TMZ. Ray Rice was then released from the Baltimore Ravens. He was then also indefinably suspended from the league. International Play : The NFL is thinking about adding a London team. This way the NFL could expand onto the international level. This would get more exposure for American football. The only big limitation is that some teams would have to give up one of their home games for the London team to have home games. |
